Education in Burkina Faso

The education in Burkina Faso is categorized as primary, secondary and higher education. Girls’ literacy rate is low and boys are given preference in receiving education. The education in Burkina Faso is free for children age 6 through 16. However, government education budget is sufficient enough and in most of the cases and students / parents need to pay. Most of the families are poor due to lack of opportunities and skills and finds it difficult to pay for schooling of children.

Students in Burkina Faso need taking national examinations to pass a level and to take admission from lower level to upper level like from primary level to middle level, etc, etc. Students willing to earn higher degree or diploma etc need passing in secondary level examination. According to a report published by United Nations, Burkina Faso is one among the most illiterate countries in the world with literacy rate only 12.8%. 

A child who enters into primary schools and completes 6years of basic education writes elementary school completion examination. The elementary certificate makes the basis for admission into middle school. However enrollment is very low at this stage. The duration of middle school is 4 years. Subjects like languages, geography, history, mathematics, and sciences are taught, at the end of 4 years junior high school diploma which is mandatory requirement for enrollment into senior high school. Some students also choose an alternate of joining junior high vocational school for job oriented education.

The High School Diploma makes the basis for admission into senior high school. At this stage school education level equals 12 years of education. Certificate from senior high school is mandatory for access of tertiary education. The participation of youths at tertiary education is significant low. Government and other world agencies like UNESCO, World Bank, and various charitable organizations etc are acting in the direction of making education stronger in Burkina Faso. Higher Education in Burkina Faso is offered through different universities.

The first private higher education school was established in 1992. Supervision rates are different from one school to another. At the University of Ouagadougou there is one teacher for every 24 students, while at The Polytechnic University of Bobo-Dioulasso they have one teacher for every three students.
